If you have ever walked into a Pilates studio and been frightened and intimidated by a piece of equipment that resembles a medieval torture device, chances are you have seen a Pilates Reformer. At first glance, this piece of equipment is enough to make even the most toned and conditioned Pilates expert run for the hills; however the Reformer is a beneficial tool that can add depth to your Pilates workout routine. Once you understand the function of this machine and how it is used, you will certainly want to add it into your current Pilates workout plan.
The Anatomy of the Reformer
The Reformer was designed by the creator of the Pilates exercise program, Jospeh Pilates. During his work with soldiers in World War I, the Reformer was created to aid patients in rehabilitation after illness and injury. It was designed as a tool to both simplify and enhance a Pilates workout, making the program more accessible to those who needed extra support and modification.
Each of the parts of the Pilates Reformer serves its own purpose. Though it is somewhat intimidating to look at, once you investigate the components, everything will begin to make sense.
- The most obvious part of the Reformer is the padded mat. This is where you would lay or sit when using the equipment. It glides along with your body as you go through your workout.
- The adjustable foot bar and springs are in place to provide support and resistance during certain motions and techniques.
- The headrest can be adjusted to your own preferences and exercise modification needs. Depending on the results desired, it could be positioned up or down, accordingly.
- Shoulder blocks are in place to prevent you from slipping upwards on the carriage of the machine. These can also be used to rest the hands or feet during some techniques.
- The straps are used on either the hands or feet and are attached to a pulley system on the machine. These also provide resistance as you go through certain exercises.
The Benefits of Reformer Exercises
The Reformer may look very complex, but it can actually simplify your Pilates workout, providing greater benefits from the exercises than a mat workout alone. The resistance that is provided by this piece of equipment can further tone and strengthen the muscle groups that are worked through Pilates routines. For those with certain physical limitations or who are using Pilates for therapy, the Reformer can provide the necessary support and protection to exercise safely and successfully. If you want greater diversity in your workout, the Reformer can provide that, as well.
Using the Reformer
Pilates Reformers are available to purchase and use in the home, however you may want to try a class or have some one on one professional instruction before making that step. Every Pilates studio and many gyms and health clubs offer reformer classes for their clients or you may be able to schedule private training, if you prefer. The Reformer can bring wonderful benefits to your fitness plan, but as with any piece of equipment, can be dangerous if used improperly. At the very least, you should have basic working knowledge of the techniques and principles of Pilates and a detail instructional book or DVD, before attempting to use the Reformer on your own.
