Sometimes it's hard to know exactly what you want out of a career. You may have worked several jobs but haven't found what you want to do for the rest of your life. You may want an occupation you will feel passionate about, which makes you love to wake up in the morning. Finding the best career for you involves work and a process of trial and error.
How to Find the Best Career for You
It is possible to figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life as far as a career. Here are some ways so you can find the occupation you have always been looking for but may not have found yet.
Likes and dislikes
List what you like and dislike about all the jobs you have ever had. Include hobbies or extracurricular activities because they can give you insight on types of industries you might want to look into.
Income
Think about how much you would like to make in your career. You may want to make millions but it's better to think realistically and come up with a figure you can live comfortably with first.
Brainstorm
Take your list of likes and dislikes, your desired income and come up with another list of possible occupations. You may want to visit your local library and look through the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), which lists many different possible careers.
Research
Once you have your list of occupations, search the Internet for more information about how to get started in each field. Research education or training you need to start gaining experience in each of your occupations. You might want to look into the growth of the field to see how stable it will be in the future.
Education and experience
You want to have a good balance of both education and field experience because it will give you an advantage when you apply to positions in your career. You will be much more desirable if the company will not have to spend a lot of time training you.
Find possible employers
Once you have decided what type of career you want you can start applying with companies. Research the company and ask during interviews if you there is possibility for advancement within the company, this will make it possible for you to reach your career aspirations.
Trial and Error
Sometimes you will have to try out different industries and companies before you really know what you want out of a career. You won't know exactly what you like to do until you do it. Don't get discouraged if you don't find the career you want in the first or second job you take. Life is a journey and there is no reason why you need to stay in a job that doesn't fulfill you and make you happy. Take your time and shape your life the way you want it.
