Hypnotherapy and Past Life Regression

There are a variety of techniques that can be used in hypnotherapy. One of the most controversial techniques is Past Life Regression. In this form of hypnotherapy, the practitioner will guide the client into a hypnotic state and begin to attempt to delve into the client’s previous lives. Those who seek out this type of therapy have a strong belief or curiosity about reincarnation and wish to see how their previous life experiences have an effect on their current life and situations. Not every hypnotherapy practitioner uses these techniques; however finding a therapist who understands this concept is usually not too difficult.

Explaining Past Life Regression

To completely understand past life regression, you must first understand the concept of reincarnation. In various religions, cultures, and schools of thought, it is believed that a person lives more than once. The physical being will die, but the soul will live on in another form. Within many of these religions and systems of belief, there is no afterlife, just a continual cycle of death and rebirth. In others, they believe that the soul lives on until a certain purpose is served, and then it will go on to an eternal resting place.

Past life regression attempts to explore the previous incarnations of a person and possibly explain some of their issues, memories, and reactions they are having in their current life. This technique does not always work for everyone, but some have been able to recall events that they otherwise would have had no knowledge. In order for past life regression therapy to be effective, you must have a belief that reincarnation is at least a distinct possibility. If you are of the belief that there is only one cycle of life for a soul, your mind will not allow you to experience the memories of a past life, as hypnosis does not work to change your beliefs and moral ideas.

Past Life Regression as Therapy

When past life regression is used as a therapy, the object of a hypnotherapy session is to explore the memories of past experiences to discover the root of a problem or issue. These memories are hidden deep within the subconscious mind and cannot be accessed as our current memories. Once a past episode is uncovered, the individual can then begin working past the problem in their life through other hypnotherapy methods. For instance, someone using past life regression to overcome a fear of dogs may find out that they were attacked by a dog in a previous life. This is a very basic example, but many believe that certain experiences carried along with the soul and affect the mind with each successive existence.

Past Life Regression as a Spiritual Experience

Those who believe that the cycle of reincarnation is a part of a long journey of spiritual growth turn to past life regression to seek out the path they have previously taken. They believe that this will help them to grow and develop within their current life and prepare themselves for the possibility of the next life. This spiritual enlightenment through past life regression can give new meaning and understanding to the situations in the current life.
