WHAT IS ALTERNATIVE HEALING?

‘Alternative’ is defined by the American Heritage dictionary as “offering a choice between two or more possibilities existing outside conventional institutions or systems.” Alternative therapies usually include all treatments for health problems not addressed by Western medicine.

Many of the alternative therapies today come from traditional healing practices of many cultures, mainly India and China. Traditional Chinese medicine is roughly 3,000 years old and the Indian principles of Ayurvedic medicine are believed to be 5,000 years old. Although alternative methods are much older than Western medicine, it has taken many years to be accepted by Western or allopathic mainstream medicine. Practitioners try to use the term ‘complementary’ when they can, because terms like ‘alternative’ or ‘non-traditional’ have negative implications. This can suggest methods other than traditional Western medicine are unproven or unsafe. Complementary therapies are often used with mainstream medicine – such as meditation with drug therapy to control pain.

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM WESTERN MEDICINE?

Alternative therapies use a more holistic approach to health that includes mind, body and spirit, and various cultural venues of diagnosis and treatment. Unlike Western medicine, alternative therapies don’t rely solely on science to make a diagnosis. Many people use them for relaxation, maintain their health or well-being; others to resolve chronic issues.

WHAT ARE MANUAL HEALING THERAPIES?

Manual healing therapies include therapies where the practitioner uses his/her hands to treat their patient. Most therapies like Rolfing, chiropractic, massage, and the Feldenkrais, Alexander and Trager techniques use physical manipulation or pressure of some sort to readjust the body. Other techniques like Therapeutic Touch, energy fields are moved in and around the patient and can include physical touch.

WHAT IS ENERGY HEALING?

Energy healing uses methods that focus primarily on the flow of energy throughout the body. Most practitioners, regardless of their beliefs, believe in a universal life force - similar to the Ayurvedic concept of prana and the Chinese concept of qi, which permeates space and sustains all living organisms. In healthy people, this life energy flows throughout the body, balanced in a way that nourishes the body. When people get sick their energy is blocked by something in their body and is out of balance. Energy healers believe that people can become healthy by unblocking their energy using techniques including Acupuncture, Reflexology, Acupressure, Reiki, and Qigong. Meditation, singing bowls, music therapy and crystals can also be used to heal or unblock stuck energies.

Energy healing is often a very subtle process and doesn’t require a lot of verbal processing. For some people, it’s often the easiest way for them to process difficult issues, like a parents’ death, that have become lodged somewhere in their body. It’s not inexpensive but, like other alternative therapies, it can help one relax and go more with the flow of life.
