Aromatherapy is becoming more and more popular for its increasing number of healing properties. But something people are only just beginning to catch onto is that essential oils can be put to work for you in the gym. Whether you only make a casual visit tot eh gym once or twice a week or whether you are a total gym addict, there are a number of essential oils that can not only help you get more out of your work out but can also prevent injury and soothe those aches and pains after a long session.
Essential oils and your total performance
It’s true, aromatherapy oils can help to improve your whole performance in the gym. When you are working out you rely more than ever on your body’s circulation of blood for the transfer of oxygen-energy from your lungs to all your body’s organs and cells, as well as carrying essential nutrients. Whatever your sport, however you work out, certain essential oils have the ability to stimulate your circulation and keep everything flowing optimally. These oils are ginger, geranium, cypress, bergamot, cedar, rosemary, juniper and black pepper. Because these oils are volatile add ten drops (either single oil or a combination), to one ounce of your favorite carrier oil before rubbing them on your skin. Apply the mix at least an hour before your workout to give the oils chance to enter your system.
Reducing strain and preventing pain
Using a circulation boosting massage oil will certainly make a difference that you will notice. Not only will it help you through your workout it will help to prevent strains and the pain of inflammation. Inflammation is caused by fluid seeping into damaged tissue. If the injury also contains blood from damaged blood vessels, this will also cause bruising. Inflammation will restrict the normal flow of blood because of the swollen tissue; this in turn increases healing time and creates nerve pressure which produces pain. Essential oils will reduce the swelling from inflammation. To solve strain and prevent pain use lavender, marjoram, arnica, juniper and rose essential oils.
Clean up sweat and prevent fungus
If you have an aroma problem with your gym shoes or bag, essential oils can come to the rescue. They will not only clear up sweaty smells, they will also prevent the growth of bacteria that thrives in sweaty places. Mix 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of cornstarch, ad to the mix 15 drops of bergamot oil and 15 drops of sandalwood oil. Mix thoroughly so that you don’t lose any of the oil, and then sift. Sprinkle a fine layer the powder over the insoles of your gym shoes, bag and any other equipment that smells sweaty. Leave the powder their overnight then vacuum in the morning. You will be amazed at the difference. If you want a portable solution to help keep your gear back or your locker smelling fresh and to prevent bacteria, drop 15-20 drops of either essential oil of lavender or cedar on a piece of cloth and place it in either place. It will last for weeks.
