Some essential oils can be used safely on dogs and offer an alternative way to heal and promote wellness. Animals, like humans are affected by aromas and can benefit form the healing properties of essential oils. Because dogs have a wonderfully powerful sense of smell – about 25 times more olfactory receptors that humans- they are acutely sensitive to smells around them. This also means that they may become distracted by smells or sensitized to them more quickly. The size of your dog also matters; larger dogs have a greater sense of smell than smaller dogs do. Because of their high sensitivity you need to use a smaller amount on your pet than you would on yourself.
Here are some common essential oils and their benefits for your four-legged friend:
To repel fleas and ticks:
Essential oils of citronella, cedar wood and pine are effective in repelling fleas and ticks; they will also give your dog’s coat a healthy sheen. Simply add a few drops to a clean towel or your dog’s brush and smooth it into his coat.
For small cuts and grazes:
If your dog has been in a bit of a scrape and you want to keep the wound clean and prevent infection your essential oil of choice would be lavender. Add a few drops to a bowl of warm water and this will draw out any infection and also help the wound to heal faster and prevent scarring.
For joint pain:
If you have an older dog, he may suffer from the joint pain of arthritis. A simple blend will help to ease sore joints and connective tissue. Add 2 drops of lavender and 2 drops of rosemary oil to your carrier oil of choice and rub the blend into your pet’s joints.
For skin irritation:
If your pooch is suffering form dry or irritated skin, mix 3 drops of lavender oil and 3 drops of geranium oil into the effected area once a day until you see results.
To control pet odor:
This natural spray can be used on furniture, carpets, pet bedding or directly on your dog for a fresh aroma. Mix 6 drops of geranium, 6 drops of lavender and 4 drops of lemon in a spray bottle light carrier oil. Shake each time before you spray.
To calm your dog:
If your dog is stressed or prone to aggressive outbursts, you can use this blend wither as a muscle rub or in a diffuser to calm him down. Add 4 drops of ylang ylang and 4 drops of sandalwood to your favorite carrier oil and mix.
